Becoming a Hairbraiding Technician/ Natural Stylist

Published on 4 April 2024 at 16:11

Licensing is different in every state, and I encourage you to go to your State Board Cosmetology website to get all the laws and requirements for your state. With that being said I will go into detail about Oklahoma's requirements for a Hair braiding Technician Certification.

According to Oklahoma State Borad of Cosmetology and Barbering (OSBC&B) a hair braiding technician is a person certified by the Board to perform hair braiding, hair weaving techniques, and hair extensions. This means that you can only perform one or all of these three (3) services.

I know you are probably thinking, "so why can't I wash hair or use hot tools to style the extensions?" The answer is because Oklahoma does not require school/ coursework for this certification. If you want to be able to wash hair and use hot tools you would have to join a cosmetology program near you. They teach you many safety tips that you will need to understand before you start offering those services.

Come back next week for the Cosmetology School Tips and Licensing Blog!

License Requirements for Oklahoma

Oklahoma does not require you to attend classes to become a certified hair braiding technician, but you are still required to be certified. To become certified, you will be required to take a safety and sanitation exam. Requirements for the exam include being at least seventeen (17) years old, passing the exam with a percentage of seventy-five (75%), complete the application (which can be found on the OSBC&B website, you will have to print it off and mail it to them), and the Rules and Regulations book that they will send in the mail, once you mail in your application and five-dollar ($5) licensing fee

The rules and regulation booklet that you get is your study guide for the test. So please read it and get familiar with it. You never know what they might ask on the exam, so be prepared! The exam will be taken at the OSBC&B offices located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They will mail you a letter that will state what day and time you will need to be in OKC to take the exam. If you cannot make it, you will need to call and reschedule, and I do believe that you will have to pay again. So, if it's not an emergency try to make your testing date. On your testing date you will need to take your ID and the letter that was mailed to you. Thats it, that's all. No phones or smart watches are allowed into the testing area and if you have them, they will have you leave them in your car or outside the door of the testing area. ***They are not responsible for anything that is stolen while it is sitting in the hallway, so just leave everything in the car and lock your doors.

Other States Requirements

***All 50 states are not mentioned.

Louisiana requires their natural stylist/braiding technicians to take a formal test over textured hair.

19 other states are looking to follow their lead, but so far New York is the only one that came up with a bill over textured hair following Louisiana's lead.

Rhode Island requires 1500 hours of coursework.

South Carolina requires 6 hours of training on natural hair via an online course.

North Carolina requires 300 hours of training on coily/curly hair types in order to be considered a natural hair specialist.
